The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is today expected to announce the names of the players to comprise Guyana’s national rugby sevens team that will be competing at the International Rugby Board’s (IRB) World Sevens Series in Las Vegas Sevens in the U.S.A., February 12 and 13.
The GRFU is scheduled to host a press conference this morning at Olympic House to announce the team of seven players and a few reserves who are scheduled to depart early next week. Newly appointed technical director Spencer Robinson, who was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, is also expected to be at tomorrow’s press briefing.
Team manager Robin Roberts told Guyana Times International Sport earlier this week that Robinson would be arriving today, after his flights was delayed due to a snow storm. Roberts also divulged that the teams will intensify their training by having morning and afternoon sessions in the few days remaining before the tournament in the U.S.A.
Guyana was invited to the tournament for the second consecutive year after winning the North America, and Caribbean (NACRA) tournament which was held in Guyana last year. The five-time NACRA champions also won the inaugural Central American and Caribbean Sport Organisation (CACSO) tournament in front of their home crowd at the Guyana National Stadium last year.
The team will be without three of its best players in Kevin Mackenzie, Albert La Rose and Dwayne Schroeder. La Rose was suspended for two-years, while Mackenzie got one year and Schroeder nine months. All three players were members of last year’s team which participated in the Las Vegas Sevens.
